Design Beyond Space: The Power of Detail

China, Beijing, July 29, 2025 — Design is not just about the construction of spatial forms; it is an expression of human spirit, rich in meaning in the details, and showcasing craftsmanship in the smallest of things. Following the "Listening — The Voices of the Most Influential Creators in the Industry" series of interviews in 2024, Schneider Electric has once again joined forces with the Chinese edition of Interior Design magazine to bring the second season of the "Listening" series. This season's theme, "Little Things, Big Impact," delves into the influence of design, promoting the collision and integration of residential aesthetics and industry innovation, and exploring how detailed design can reshape the value of space.

This design dialogue features Sun Huafeng, Chief Design Director of Dinghe Building Decoration Design Engineering Co., Ltd., discussing how he redefine the human touch of modern living spaces through his keen insight into details and precise grasp of future trends. In every project of his career, whether commercial or residential renovation, Sun Huafeng's design reflects his delicate perception and clever response to life.

Design Innovation

In 2020, Sun Huafeng led the renovation project of the cave dwellings in Sanmenxia, ingeniously modifying the classic "one courtyard" layout of the traditional siheyuan to a "two courtyard" structure. This adjustment significantly improved the living experience of the space, blending the tranquility of tradition with the agility of modernity, preserving the historical charm of cave dwellings while meeting contemporary needs for natural scenery, privacy, and abundant lighting. Here, details are no longer decorative, but bridges of function and emotion.

Sun Huafeng, who is passionate about details, said that while we are contemplating spatial structures, technology is subtly changing the way we design. In the era of rapid development of intelligent tools, technology will not replace designers, but will help them focus more on humanistic thinking. "For example, the currently popular AI tools save designers a lot of time in collecting information and constructing frameworks, allowing us to focus more on understanding people." In addition, the application of high-tech devices such as smart doors, smart switches, and voice control in smart homes brings convenience and takes care of the needs of residents of different ages and physical conditions. These "small but smart" devices are becoming key factors in improving the quality of life.

However, in an era where intelligent and automated technology is becoming more common, what truly touches people is still those visible, tangible, and felt details. Sun Huafeng firmly believes that because the value of design comes from its proximity to people, the future of design will move towards a deep humanistic era, and "humanistic care" will become an unavoidable core issue for designers. He points out, "As the times progress, design concepts should also evolve. But what cannot change is the focus and care for people." In his view, true design innovation is not a superficial project of visual emphasis, but an in-depth listening to the ignored human needs in daily life, and focusing on details is the most real expression of humanistic care.

The attention to detail and warmth that Sun Huafeng holds not only responds to user needs but also reflects the current indoor designers' reinterpretation of spatial functions. Now, more and more industry forces are delving into the true core behind the surface — humanistic care. As a global leader in industrial technology, Schneider Electric has always been concerned about the lifestyle and sustainable future behind space, and is working with designers to focus on humanistic concepts, so that the power of design is not just in form, but truly changes people's lives. In addition to the "Listening" series of interviews, Schneider Electric will also work with the Chinese edition of Interior Design to continuously launch the "Searching — Design Industry Influencers and City Cover Characters" and "Co-creating — Excellent Cases of Design Industry Influencers" series of activities, focusing on the detailed design and real expression of designers in the context of the times, and lighting the "big meaning" of design with "little care."
